Empirical investigation into questions of human behavior and the law has traditionally been siloed within individual scientific disciplines. However, these questions are too complex by nature to be addressed independently by distinct lines of research and instead require truly integrative solutions. Convergence research is an emerging collaborative research model that emphasizes the merging of cutting-edge technologies and scientific methodologies from multiple academic disciplines, with coequal input community and industry partners, in order to address a complex problem or a pressing societal need. Convergence research is considered by many academics to be the next evolution of life and behavioral sciences. The convergence research model emphasizes deep integration across disciplines via the cooperative work of researchers from different scientific backgrounds until theories, knowledge, methods, challenges, and even vocabulary are integrated in pursuit of a common problem or goal. Here at the Isaac Ray Research Program, we utilize convergence research to help illuminate some of the most important gaps in knowledge regarding the mechanisms that drive the interactions between human behavior and legal systems.
